Build 514 submitted, FoV warning

September 25th, 2012

I have submitted build 514 to apple as of last night.
Fixes the update issues, adds 2.0 and Nip/Tuck to smart replacement, updates the mp4v2 engine, adds high res app icons, adds keyboard shortcuts to the editing tabs, and added an Erase ALL metadata option to the tool menu. I’ll release 513 to the non App Store customers when the App Store version is released.

Those of you who download torrents (naughty naughty ;) ), I recommend avoiding mp4 releases from the FoV group. Files from this release group are malformed, and will be unplayable after tagging (though they are lucky they play at all). This problem exists for all apps using the mp4v2 engine, including iDentify and Subler, and apps using the AtomicParsley engine like MetaX won’t tag it at all. Clearly the problem lies in how the group is creating the files. But hey, you get what you pay for right?

I purchased from AppStore today thinking it was v514, as you stated this 3 weeks ago. Instead it was v501, yet it says it is v502. In the meantime, I’ve requested a refund. I will gladly purchase when there are proper versions to download, and bugs are ironed out…

I stated it had been submitted to Apple. Not that they had approved it nor that it was available. I do this so my customers know a fix is on the way, but that at this point it is fully in Apple’s hands to either make it available or to tell me what more I need to do. Normally this process takes 1-2 weeks. This time we are up to 3 weeks, which is needless to say, rather ridiculous. I have submitted a ticket with them to find out what the hold up is. If you register the trial version available at MacUpdate, you will find it does not have the update bug.

I’ve been using your app since v1 and love it!! I wasn’t even aware that there were any apps that did similar tagging until you mentioned Subler. Looking at their site, I know the ease of use for your app is much more appealing than using theirs on a regular basis. However, I noticed that they can handle MKV files. Is that something you plan on incorporating? If not, does that mean using their app for MKVs would allow me to import converted (MUXed?) videos into iTunes and then view view my AppleTV?

Thanks for the great app and any help/info you could provide!!

Well, found a YouTube video (http://youtu.be/Ccl3NnD47xI) that shows how to use Subler to change from MKV to MP4. So I’m guessing I should just do that and then tag the MP4 file using Identify2 as I do for any other MP4s, right?

I’d still be interested in knowing if you think there may ever be the ability just to convert/tag an MKV file using just your app. Thanks again!!

I’m not familiar with that feature in their app. However, unless conversion actually takes place, I would think compatibility with iDevices would be spotty at best.

IDentify was made to make the files look nice on iDevices, not just iTunes. As such, it will always require the files to be in the correct format before iDentify will handle them. So no, there will be no mkv support.

Give it a try. Personally, I use handbrake to convert my videos to the correct format.

It’s in the audio. I (used to) mux my files into mp4, when converting from mkv. [The AC3 there didn't always lay nice.] So I used the same technique: Pass thru on the video stream and re-encoding the audio. iDentify tagged mp4′s played perfectly after.

I use Mp4tools, not the most pretty tools nor stable, but it does get the job done (and has batch function). Handbrake is perfect when coming from another base format (xvid, avi, etc), but otherwise is more of a jackhammer. 1 min for a file using a remix (+re-encode of audio with FoV) compared to 14 min + visible degradation in video.
